Attica prison criminal investigation

On July 17, 2026, at about 6:50 p.m., the NYS Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was notified of the death of an incarcerated individual following an altercation at Attica Correctional Facility. The preliminary investigation revealed that one group of incarcerated individuals attacked a second group of incarcerated individuals, resulting in the death of one of those involved. A second incarcerated individual was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Erie County Medical Center. 


A total of seven incarcerated individuals were involved in the fight and have been identified.


The NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Office of Special Investigations is assisting with this case. The NYS Attorney General’s Office was notified and responded to the scene. 


This is an ongoing criminal investigation and more details will be released when available.
