Otto-Eldred and Smethport Area Launch Joint Committee to Explore School Futures

Two neighboring school districts have decided that the next chapter for their schools should be studied together, not separately.

The Otto-Eldred and Smethport Area school boards have each approved the creation of a joint committee that will examine enrollment trends, financial pressures, and long-term options for both districts. Over the next 12 months, the committee is expected to study possible paths forward and bring recommendations back to both boards.

That decision does not settle what comes next. It starts a process.

For families, staff members, taxpayers, and students, the move matters because school decisions made today can shape transportation, class offerings, staffing, taxes, and community identity for years. A yearlong review gives the districts time to look at facts, ask hard questions, and weigh choices before any larger decisions are made.
