WORST BATCH OF WILDFIRE SMOKE ARRIVES TODAY, JULY 16

The strongest batch of surface wildfire smoke will come into the region later this morning and into the afternoon, spreading across the entire state. The highest concentrations of smoke will be in northern Pennsylvania, with a bit less as you head farther south. Nevertheless, looking at the recent air quality stations upstream with a combination of model guidance, we have a rough day ahead of us. While I do not want to forecast 300 - 400+ air quality, those in the darkest region (Area A), may see air quality reduced to those levels.

Some stations upstream are even reading as high as 600+, which will be extremely hazardous air.

AREA A (AQI 250+): Very Unhealthy air quality is expected. Even healthy individuals may experience eye irritation, coughing, or difficulty breathing. Everyone should avoid prolonged outdoor activity, especially those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and outdoor workers.

AREA B (AQI 200+): Very Unhealthy air quality is possible. Sensitive groups are at the greatest risk, but healthy individuals may also experience symptoms. Limit strenuous outdoor activity and keep windows closed if smoke is present.

AREA C (AQI 150+): Unhealthy air quality is expected. Everyone may begin to experience health effects, especially sensitive groups. Reduce prolonged outdoor activity whenever possible.

AREA D (AQI 100+): Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups air quality is expected. Those with asthma, COPD, heart disease, older adults, and children should limit prolonged outdoor activity.

AREA E (AQI 50+): Moderate air quality is expected. Most people should not experience health effects, though unusually sensitive individuals may notice minor irritation.

The smoke will stick around on Friday, with the worst of the smoke shifting into southern Pennsylvania. Showers and thunderstorms on Saturday will likely help to clear out the air, but we will have to continue to watch the fires and northwest flow next week for a return of smoke.
