Commercial Vehicle Fatal Collision

On August 17, 2026, at 10:05 P.M., Troopers out of SP Buffalo responded to a single commercial vehicle collision on the eastbound I-90 in the town of Hanover. Investigation determined that a 2020 Volvo OTR with a 53’ trailer exited the roadway on the north shoulder striking a guide rail. The operator, Petros D. Liben, 54 of Bartlett, TN had injuries to his face and abdomen. Liben was airlifted to Erie County Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
UPDATE on August 19, 2026. Troopers out of SP Buffalo- Troop T and Troop A BCI continued the investigation which yielded additional information relating to the collision. Investigation determined a fender/mudflap sheared off a 32-foot trailer hauled by a 2019 Dodge Ram traveling westbound on the I-90. The partial fender/mudflap shaft becoming airborne crossed the center median directly into the path of the Volvo OTR windshield and struck the operator, Liben.
NYSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit, Collision Reconstruction Unit, Bureau of Criminal Investigation and DEC Spill Response Unit responded to the scene.
This is still an active investigation.
