Community Turns Out in Force for To Fill A Backpack Packing Event

To Fill A Backpack founder Andy Kulp recently posted on Facebook about a challenge that many nonprofit and volunteer-based organizations are facing today: finding people willing to step up, get involved, and donate their time to support community causes.

Across the country, many organizations have reported declining volunteer participation, making it increasingly difficult to carry out programs and services that countless individuals and families depend on. For groups that rely heavily on volunteers, every helping hand matters.

That is why Kulp's recent Facebook post carried a special significance.

Following a recent backpack packing event, Kulp expressed his gratitude after an overwhelming number of volunteers showed up to help prepare backpacks for distribution.

"Well folks...I honestly don't know where to start with THANK YOU'S," Kulp wrote. "I am totally blown away with the amount of people that showed up to help pack tonight. We had more people there to help than we ever had since about the third or fourth year of packing. We literally had so many people that we had to set up another table."

The packing process itself is not particularly difficult, but it requires patience and dedication. Volunteers spend hours moving around tables, filling bag after bag with supplies, repeating the process over and over until every backpack is ready for the students who will receive them.

"It's not hard work but it is monotonous work," Kulp noted. "Walk around the table and shove stuff into a bag only to grab another bag and take that same walk again...over and over and over again."

Despite the repetitive nature of the task, volunteers showed up in numbers not seen in years, creating an atmosphere of community spirit and shared purpose. Their willingness to donate an evening of their time will have a direct impact on local children and families preparing for the upcoming school year.

Kulp said he could "go on for paragraphs" expressing his appreciation, but ultimately kept his message simple.

"THANK YOU to everyone and hope you had enough fun to return next year," he wrote.

The strong turnout serves as a reminder that while many organizations continue to struggle with volunteer recruitment, there are still communities willing to rally around causes that make a difference. For To Fill A Backpack, this year's packing event was not just about preparing school supplies. It was a powerful demonstration of what can happen when neighbors come together to support one another.

As planning begins for next year's event, Kulp said information will be posted early so volunteers can mark their calendars and once again help ensure local students start the school year with the supplies they need to succeed.
