On Tuesday, March 17th, the Smethport Area School District held the 2025-2026 National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. Four full members and nine associate members were inducted into the Smethport Chapter. These students join the fifteen juniors and seniors who are already full members including this year’s officers President-Mara Ours, Vice President-Callie Digel, Secretary-Nicholas Learn, and Treasurer-Hannah Taylor.

The ceremony began with Principal Douglas Dickerson welcoming everyone to the special evening. He proceeded to extend a thank-you to all the parents, families, and friends for helping guide and support these young people. After his opening remarks, the returning NHS members presided over the ceremony. President, Mara Ours, introduced our esteemed guest speaker, Mrs. Brittany Bender. Mrs. Brittany Bender, a 2008 graduate of Smethport Area Jr/Sr High School and a three-year member of the Smethport Chapter of NHS, shared her thoughts on the four cardinal principles of the NHS. Mrs. Bender’s powerful message on scholarship, leadership, service, and character left a lasting impact on both the students and the audience. She challenged each person to step out of their comfort zone to achieve the most of each situation. She reminded everyone that leadership is not simply a title. Leadership is stepping up when others haven’t. Both leadership and service do not have to be large initiatives. Instead, small acts of kindness display both of these qualities. Finally, she challenged each person to continue to be a person of upstanding character.

The ceremony concluded with the new inductees each signing the chapter’s register and then being presented a certificate of membership by Principal Douglas Dickerson and Superintendent Brice Benson. Each inductee was also presented a yellow rose, the society’s flower which is a symbol of excellence. All students, family, and friends celebrated with a small reception afterwards. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs. Katie Benson for the beautiful music, Miss Emily Housler for creating the perfect atmosphere with sound and lighting, Mr. Shane Locke who captured these meaningful moments through photography, Graceful Blooms and Smethport Area Education Association for providing the gorgeous flower arrangements and the individual roses for the inductees, and Adviser, Ms. Karen Moses, for her guidance and dedication in organizing this ceremony.

The Smethport Area School District wishes to congratulation all these dedicated and hard-working students of the Smethport Chapter of the National Honor Society. Your hard work and commitment to excellence will continue to help you reach your goals in life. Every single one of you make us “Hubber Proud”!
