Port Allegany accepts the 2024 PIAA Class 1A runner-up trophy. The boundary school Gators lost to non-boundary school Bishop Guilfoyle. In the future, they might not play.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives took the first step towards the potential of separating boundary- and non-boundary-school playoffs on Wednesday when it overwhelmingly passed House Bill 41, 178-23.

But it is just the first step, and it is far from a reality, even if the State Senate, which is back in session next week, also passes the bill, and if Governor Josh Shapiro signs it.

Even with all those steps, it is not automatic that the playoff structure of the PIAA will change.

That’s because the bill itself doesn’t force change; it just allows it.

That is a major difference.
